Totally Killer adalah film scifi slasher yang digarap oleh Nahnatchka Khan dengan diproduseri spesialis horor, Jason Blum di bawah payung Blumhouse Production. Film ini dibintangi Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen, Liana Liberato, dan Randall Park. Film ini dirilis pada tanggal 6 Oktober lalu. Akankan kombinasi genrenya mampu menawarkan sesuatu yang segar bagi genre bertema remaja?
Hubungan Jamie (Shipka) dan ibunya Pam (Bowen) kurang harmonis akibat trauma 35 tahun lalu ketika tiga sahabat ibunya dibantai oleh pembunuh bertopeng di kota kecil yang sama. Kini, sang pembunuh mengincar Pam dan berhasil membunuhnya. Media berspekulasi dengan adanya relasi pembunuhan ini dengan kasus di masa silam. Entah mengapa, si tukang jagal pun, kini mengincar Jamie. Dalam satu pergulatan seru, Jamie pun terlontar ke 35 tahun lalu melalui mesin waktu yang dibuat sobatnya, Amelia, untuk tugas sekolah. Jamie pun terjebak sesaat sebelum pembunuhan berantai terjadi dan ia pun harus mencegahnya segalanya sebelum sang pembunuh beraksi.
Sebuah premis yang amat menarik dan menjanjikan. Film ini bak kombinasi antara Back to the Future dan Scream dengan tone Happy Death Day. Sayangnya, film ini tidak memiliki atmosfir ketegangan yang diharapkan melalui plot kisah yang main-main dan tanggung. Kisahnya jelas terlalu memaksa serta tak banyak argumen kuat tentang banyak hal. Mesin waktu bisa begitu saja dibuat oleh Amelia untuk pameran sekolah dengan hanya berbekal catatan ibunya? Oke, tentu ini bukan masalah besar, kita tahu kisahnya bakal mengarah ke mana. Namun anehnya, sosok Jamie yang terlempar ke masa lalu pun tidak lantas terlihat canggung dengan situasinya, seolah ini adalah sesuatu yang sangat wajar. Yah memang, untuk tontonan serius ini bukan porsi penonton seperti tiga film rujukan di atas.
Melalui eksplorasi genre yang unik, sci-fi, slasher, misteri, dan remaja, Totally Killer membuang kesempatan premisnya dengan hanya bekerja sebagai hiburan semata. Sesungguhnya banyak potensi yang bisa diolah lebih jauh yang bisa dimanfaatkan kisahnya. Hubungan Jamie dan ibunya yang seumur, lalu hubungan Jamie dengan ibu sahabatnya, Lauren (ibu Amelia), semuanya terasa kurang menggigit. Sebagai film horor dan misteri pun, Totally Killer tidak meninggalkan sayatan berarti. Tercatat satu-satunya penampilan bagus adalah protagonis utamanya, yakni olah akting Kiernan Shipka dengan segudang pengalamannya di seri televisi. Sebagai tontonan fans sci-fi dan horor, Totally Killer cukup menghibur sebagai tontonan streaming. Tidak lebih.

The relationship between Jamie (Shipka) and his mother, Pam (Bowen), is less than harmonious due to trauma 35 years ago when three of his mother’s friends were massacred by a masked killer in the same small town. Now, the Killer targets Pam and succeeds in killing her. The media speculated about the connection between this murder and cases in the past. For some reason, the butcher is now targeting Jamie. In one struggle, Jamie is thrown 35 years ago via a time machine that her friend, Amelia, made for a school assignment. Jamie is trapped just before the serial murder occurs, and now she must prevent everything before the Killer acts.
A fascinating and promising premise. This film is like a combination of Back to the Future and Scream with a Happy Death Day tone. Unfortunately, this film does not have the atmosphere of tension that is expected through a playful and bearable plot. The story is too forced, and there are few strong arguments about many things. Amelia could make a time machine for a school exhibition using only her mother’s notes. OK, this isn’t a big deal; we know where the story is going. But strangely, the figure of Jamie, who is thrown into the past, doesn’t necessarily seem awkward about the situation, as if this is very natural. Yes, for serious viewing, this is different from the portion of the audience, like the three reference films above.
Through its exploration of unique genres, sci-fi, slasher, mystery, and teen, Totally Killer throws away the chance of its premise by simply working as pure entertainment. The potential could be processed further, and the story could be exploited. The relationship between Jamie and his mother, who is the same age, and then Jamie’s relationship with his best friend’s mother, Lauren (Amelia’s mother), all feel less biting. Even as a horror and mystery film, Totally Killer doesn’t leave any significant cuts. The only good performance noted was the main protagonist, Kiernan Shipka, acting with all her experience in television series. As a show for sci-fi and horror fans, Totally Killer is quite entertaining as a streaming show—no more.
