Expend4bles adalah seri keempat film laga bertabur bintang yang kini diarahkan Scott Waugh. Film ini masih dibintangi aktor-aktor regulernya, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture serta kini didukung Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, hingga Andy García. Dengan bermodal USD 100 juta, mampukah film ini menuai sukses komersial seperti seri awalnya?
Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham), dan rekan-rekannya kini mendapat misi rahasia untuk meladeni satu kelompok teroris pimpinan Rahmat (Uwais) yang mengincar hulu ledak nuklir di Libya. Dalam satu pertempuran sengit, satu rekan mereka gugur hingga agen CIA kepala misi ini, Marsh (Garcia), mendepak Christmas karena mengabaikan perintah. Rahmat pun kini memiliki bom nuklir dan rupanya ia berniat memulai Perang Dunia III dengan meledakkannya di perbatasan Rusia. Sementara tim Expendables ditugaskan kembali mengejar Rahmat, Christmas pun dengan caranya sendiri memiliki agenda yang sama.
Sekuel ketiganya masih menggunakan formula cerita yang sama dengan seri sebelumnya. Sekelompok tim protagonis tangguh melakukan sebuah misi besar rahasia untuk menyelamatkan dunia dengan hadangan para antagonis yang sulit ditaklukkan. Para penikmat seri pendahulunya tahu persis ke mana arah kisahnya melalui dominasi aksi aktor-aktor laga jagoan kita plus selipan humornya. Penampilan para bintangnya adalah menu utama dan memang bukan plotnya. Kisahnya terlalu mudah diantisipasi (dengan secuil twist) tanpa ada ancaman yang berarti. Aksi-aksinya berjalan generik tanpa ada sesuatu yang baru, baik itu aksi perkelahian, tembak menembak, aksi kejar mengejar, hingga ledakan bom. Tipikal dan sungguh sangat melelahkan.
Bukankah aksi yang kita cari di sini? Betul, namun pada seri sebelumnya, setidaknya para bintang laganya menikmati betul peran mereka. Mereka enjoy, maka kita pun enjoy. Bintang-bintang kawakan ini sudah kita kenal betul gaya dan ekspresinya melalui film-film ikonik mereka, dan ini yang sesungguhnya kita cari dan tunggu. Sebut saja aksi khas Arnold, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Van Damme, Harrison Ford, hingga Robert Davy dalam seri-seri sebelumnya. Ini yang sudah tidak kita temui dalam sekuel terbarunya. Bintang-bintang laga Asia pendatang baru, Tony Jaa dan Iko Uwais pun tak mampu memberi kesan membekas, sekalipun di luar dugaan, Iko mendapat peran dominan. Si jelita, Megan Fox secara literal hanya sebagai pemanis belaka tanpa peran berarti.
Seperti titelnya, Expend4bles adalah sekuel sia-sia yang tak lagi menyenangkan bagi para pemain maupun penonton. Tak ada cerita yang berarti, tak ada ancaman, lubang plot yang tak terhitung, dan aksi bintang-bintangnya yang tak menggigit dan melelahkan. Sebagai penghormatan besar atas karir panjang mereka, mengapa tidak merekonstruksi cerita yang lebih manusiawi dan menyentuh, alih-alih aksi nihil seperti ini. Ini adalah sebuah kesia-sia-an besar yang tak bisa ditolerir para fans sejati bintang-bintangnya.

Actions by veteran action stars are surprisingly still being produced even though the final series did not achieve the expected success. Expend4bles is the fourth in the star-studded series of action films directed by Scott Waugh. This film still stars the regular actors Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture. It is now supported by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, and Andy García. With a capital of USD 100 million, can this film achieve commercial success like the first series?
Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham), and their colleagues now have a secret mission to deal with a terrorist group led by Rahmat (Uwais), who is targeting nuclear warheads in Libya. In a fierce battle, one of their comrades is killed until the CIA agent who heads the mission, Marsh (Garcia), expels Chrismast for ignoring orders. Rahmat now has a nuclear bomb, and he intends to start World War III by exploding it on the Russian border. While the Expendables team was reassigned to pursue Rahmat, Chrismast also had the same agenda in his way.
The third sequel still uses the same story formula as the previous series. A group of tough protagonists undertakes a big secret mission to save the world in the face of formidable antagonists. Fans of the last series know precisely where the story goes through the domination of our hero’s actions and humor. The appearance of the stars is the main menu and not the plot. The story is too easy to anticipate (with a slight twist) with no significant threats. The actions are generic without anything new, like fighting, shooting, chasing, or even bomb explosions. Typical and very tiring.
Isn’t action what we’re looking for here? That’s true, but in the previous series, at least the action stars enjoyed their roles. They enjoy their roles, then we enjoy it too. We already know these veteran stars very well with their styles and expressions through their iconic films, and this is what we are looking for and waiting for. The previous series shows the typical actions of Arnold, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Van Damme, Harrison Ford, and even Robert Davy. This is something we don’t see in the latest sequel. Asian action stars Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais were unable to make a lasting impression, although unexpectedly, Iko got a dominant role. The beautiful Megan Fox is just a sweetheart without a meaningful role.
Like its title, Expend4bles is a pointless sequel that is no longer enjoyable for the casts or audiences. There is no meaningful story, no threats, countless plot holes, and the tiring action of the stars. As a great tribute to their long career, why not reconstruct a more human and touching story instead of zilch action like this? This is a colossal waste that true fans of the stars cannot tolerate.
