Empat tahun setelah peristiwa seri pertama, sang iblis rupanya masih beraksi dengan menjagal para abdi Tuhan di berbagai gereja di Eropa, bagaimana bisa? Peristiwa ini memaksa pihak Vatikan untuk memanggil kembali suster Irine (Farmiga) untuk menginvestigasi dan melenyapkan sang iblis. Sementara di sebuah asrama perempuan eks biara tua di Perancis, kejadian-kejadian aneh dan teror mengguncang, tidak hingga sebuah rahasia besar pun terungkap melalui identitas sejati sang iblis.
Jika dibilang kisahnya terlihat dicari-cari, memang tak bisa disangkal. Sukses fenomenal The Nun (2018) yang merupakan film tersukses semesta sinematiknya (USD 365 juta/ bujet USD 22 juta), menjadikan sosok Valak adalah aset terbesar bagi franchise-nya. Relasi seri pertama dan sekuelnya ini secara mendasar tidak cukup kuat karena sang iblis sebenarnya telah disegel dalam ruang bawah tanah. Lalu mengapa sang iblis bisa lepas? Jawaban mudah adalah akibat naskahnya memaksa sang iblis untuk keluar. Tak ada komentar soal ini. Toh, dalam The Conjuring 2 pun (berlatar waktu puluhan tahun setelah The Nun dan sekuelnya) sang iblis masih eksis.
Plotnya secara garis besar dibagi tiga segmen, yakni teror sang iblis di asrama, investigasi suster Irine, lalu pertarungan klimaks. Tiga perempat durasi film disajikan bergantian antara plot investigasi dan teror di asrama. Dua segmen ini berjalan dengan tempo relatif lambat yang didominasi pengadeganan horor. Mirip seperti Insidious: The Red Door baru lalu, plotnya dibangun melalui jump scare demi jump scare. Tak diragukan, secara visual jump-scare dan segala trik horornya disajikan mapan, namun tak ada lagi inovasi yang segar dan menggigit. Penonton pun rasanya tak sulit mengantisipasi. Rupanya, tempo yang demikian lambat disimpan untuk momen akhirnya yang begitu menggelegar. Pertarungan klasik antara good vs. evil yang disajikan apik dan menghibur.
The Nun 2Â terjebak dalam rutinitas jump scare dan plot medioker, hanya tertolong pertarungan klimaks yang mengesankan. Tidak seperti seri pertamanya, film ini justru menawarkan kisah asal muasal sang iblis dengan segala perniknya. Nama Valak pun tak tersebut sekali pun sepanjang filmnya. Lantas, akankah seri ini berlanjut? 100%. Rasanya mustahil The Nun II tak sukses komersial. Sukses luar biasa Insidious: The Red Door membuktikan bahwa genre horor adalah jalan aman bagi para produser untuk menghasilkan profit berlipat dari bujetnya. Hanya saja untuk membangun franchise horor populer macam ini tentu bukan hal mudah. Seri The Conjuring dan Insidious saat ini tengah menuai emas di antara film-film box-office berbujet ratusan juta dollar yang gagal di pasaran.

If you say the story looks sought after, it cannot be denied. The phenomenal success of The Nun (2018), the most successful film in the cinematic universe (USD 365 million/budget USD 22 million), makes the figure of Valak the biggest asset for the franchise. The relationship between the first series and the sequel must be more potent because the devil has been sealed in the basement. Then why did the devil escape? The easy answer is that the script cut her loose. No comments. After all, even in The Conjuring 2 (set decades after The Nun and its sequels), the devil still exists.
The plot is broadly divided into three segments: the terror of the devil in the dormitory, the investigation of Nurse Irine, and the climax battle. Three-quarters of the film’s duration alternates between the investigative plot and terror in the dormitory. These two segments run relatively slowly, dominated by horror scenes. Similar to the recent Insidious: The Red Door, the plot is built through jump scare after jump scare. There is no doubt that visually, the jump scares and all the horror tricks presented are well-established, but there are no fresh and biting innovations. The audience didn’t find it difficult to anticipate. The slow tempo was saved for the final moment, which was so thunderous. The classic battle of good vs. evil is presented nicely and entertainingly.
The Nun 2 is trapped in a routine of jump scares and mediocre plots, only helped by an impressive climactic fight. Unlike the first series, this film offers the story of the devil’s origin with all its details. Valak’s name is not mentioned once throughout the film. So, will this series continue? 100%. It seems impossible that The Nun II will not be a commercial success. The extraordinary success of Insidious: The Red Door proves that the horror genre is a safe way for producers to make multiple profits from their budgets. Building a popular horror franchise like this is certainly not an easy thing. The Conjuring and Insidious series are reaping gold among box-office films with budgets of hundreds of millions of dollars that now failed in the market.
