PahePremium.in – Satu lagi horor dirilis menjelang Halloween, yakni It Lives Inside. Uniknya, film ini memadukan dengan mitologi lokal Asia Selatan yang diarahkan pula oleh sineas keturunan India, Bishal Dutta. Film ini dibintangi oleh bintang muda, Megan Suri, Neeru Bajwa, Mohana Krishnan, Vik Sahay, Gage Marsh, Beatrice Kitsos, serta Betty Gabriel. Akankah film horor unik ini menawarkan sesuatu yang baru?
Samidha alias Sam (Suri) adalah seorang gadis pintar keturunan India yang telah turun temurun tinggal di AS bersama keluarganya. Hubungan Sam dengan ibunya, Poorna (Bajwa) makin merenggang karena sang putri kurang menghormati tradisi dan budaya asalnya. Agar bisa membaur dengan rekan-rekan di sekolah, Sam juga menjauhi sahabat masa kecilnya, Tamira. Suatu ketika, Tamira yang berpolah aneh meminta bantuan Sam, namun ia menolak. Tamira pun mendadak hilang secara misterius, dan setelahnya Sam diteror oleh bayangan sesosok monster. Sam pun mencoba mencari tahu apa yang terjadi melalui buku jurnal milik Tamira.
Satu syarat film horor bagus adalah eksposisi dan intensitas ketegangan yang kuat dan konsisten. It Lives Inside tidak memiliki keduanya. Mitologi dan aturan main sosok sang iblis tidak memiliki pondasi yang kuat dalam kisahnya. Mengapa dan bagaimana ia bisa muncul menyeberang lautan ribuan mil? Apa ia hanya menyerang imigran? Bisa jadi ini tak penting, namun banyak hal lain yang janggal. Diceritakan sang monster memakan secara perlahan, fisik serta jiwa para korbannya, namun anehnya, orang di sekelilingnya yang berniat membantu justru langsung menjadi korban. Sisi horornya pun tak mampu dibangun dengan baik karena sisi teror yang teramat lemah. Nyaris tak ada sentakan dalam adegan horornya serta pula jump scare. Baik kisah maupun sisi horornya datar-datar saja.
It Lives Inside mencoba memadukan sisi horor dengan mitologi India, namun gagal dalam eksekusi dan pesannya karena sisi cerita yang dangkal dan teknis yang kurang menggigit. Kita semua tahu, kisahnya ingin mengarah ke mana melalui sosok Samidha yang menolak tradisi asal muasalnya. Untuk membuat satu pesan yang menyentuh dengan latar budaya seperti ini, tidak mungkin dilakukan tanpa adanya konflik dan masalah yang kuat. Banyak hal sepele dalam kisahnya tidak diolah baik hingga mampu memancing emosi penonton. Sisi tradisi dan budaya serasa hanya menjadi tempelan tanpa mengakar kuat dalam plotnya. Pembuat film rupanya kurang cerdik memanfaatkan atribut-atribut lokalnya. Bagaimana jika pesannya diartikan terbalik, sang monster adalah penjaga tradisi bagi para imigran yang melupakan adatnya? Andai saja film ini ditutup dengan sang monster yang muncul dari balik patung dewa yang menjadi hiasan rumah Sam, segalanya bisa berubah. Sayang, naskahnya melewatkan semua potensi kearifan lokalnya.

Samidha, aka Sam (Suri), is a smart girl of Indian descent who has lived in the US for generations with her family. Sam’s relationship with her mother, Poorna (Bajwa), is increasingly strained because the daughter lacks respect for the traditions and culture of her origin. Sam also distances himself from her childhood friend, Tamira, to blend in with his school peers. One day, Tamira, who had a strange attitude, asked Sam for help, but she refused. Tamira suddenly mysteriously disappears, and the shadow of a monster terrorizes Sam. Sam also tries to find out what happened through Tamira’s journal.
A good horror film requires strong and consistent exposition and tension intensity. It Lives Inside has neither. The mythology and rules of the devil’s game do not have a strong foundation in the story. Why and how could it appear across thousands of miles of ocean? Does it only attack immigrants? This may not be important, but many other things are odd. It is said that the monster slowly eats the bodies and souls of its victims, but strangely, the people around them who intend to help immediately become victims brutally. The horror side could not be developed well because the terror side was very weak. There are almost no jolts in the horror scenes and no strong jump scares. Both the story and the horror side are just flat.
It Lives Inside tries to combine horror with Indian mythology but fails in its execution and message because the story is shallow and the technical side lacks bite. We all know where the story wants to go through the figure of Samidha, who rejects the traditions of her origins. To create a touching message with a cultural background like this is impossible without strong conflicts and problems. Many trivial things in the story are not processed well enough to provoke the audience’s emotions. The tradition and culture side feels like a patch without being firmly rooted in the plot. The filmmakers weren’t clever enough to utilize local attributes. What if the message is interpreted in reverse? The monster is the keeper of traditions for immigrants who forget their traditions. If only this film had closed with the monster appearing from behind the god statue that decorated Sam’s house, everything could have changed. Unfortunately, the script misses all the potential of local wisdom.
